Jagatsinghpur: The family members of a woman, who died allegedly during a sterilisation surgery at a community health centre here, called off the agitation on Saturday following assurance of compensation by the administration.

Jagatsinghpur additional collector, Chinmayee Biswal, assured that Rs 30,000 will now be released to the family of the deceased while Rs 4 lakh government compensation will be given later.

“We will now release Rs 30,000 to next to the kin of the deceased woman from the district Red Cross fund. After getting the post-mortem report and other documents, we will submit proposal to the government for disbursing compensation of Rs 4 lakh. Once the fund is released, steps will be taken to hand over the amount to the family at the earliest,” she said.

The additional collector also assured that action will be taken against the doctor responsible for the death of the woman.

The woman, wife of Trilochan Rout of Nalakani village, died while undergoing the family planning surgery at Erasama community health centre yesterday.

Holding the doctor responsible for the death, the family members of the woman along with fellow villagers had blocked road at Medical Square earlier in the day. They demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation and stringent action against the doctor.
