Bhadrak: Normal life has come to a standstill in Bhadrak as the district Congress is observing a dawn-to-dusk bandh demanding establishment of a medical college and hospital here. The 12-hour bandh observation which began at 6 AM this morning would continue till 6 PM.

Shops, markets and business establishments in Bhadrak town have remained shut due to the bandh, while vehicular movement in the town as well as National Highway-16 has also been affected, sources said.

Citing that the long-standing demand has fallen on deaf ears, the Congress has threatened that after town bandh, the agitation will spread across all panchayats in the district. They have also asked others to join the peaceful protest.

If the government doesn’t consider our demand, protests would further intensify in coming days, the Congress has warned.

Many organisations including ‘Medical College Sangrami Sena’, Action Committee, Swabhiman Manch, Zilla Unnayan Sangharsh Samiti, Bhadrak Social Service and others who have been urging the government since years for setting up of medical college, extended support to the bandh call by the Congress.

On Wednesday, the State Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved construction of two new Medical College and Teaching Hospitals in Kandhamal and Koraput districts at a cost of Rs 680 crore.

It was decided that a 100-seated new Government Medical College and Teaching Hospital will be constructed at Phulbani apart from establishing a 650-bedded Teaching Hospital for the new Government Medical College at Koraput in order to improve the medical education and cater to the needs of common people. The projects are likely to see completion in the next three years.
