Kendrapara: National Bravery Award winning sisters Sabita Giri and Purnima Giri of Kendrapara have not only brought pride with their exemplary courage but their efforts have now ushered in developments for school they study in.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced to set up a cyclone shelter at their village school after the sister duo was named to receive the National Bravery Awards from President Ram Nath Kovind on Republic Day eve.

Congratulating the braveheart sisters, Patnaik announced a grant of Rs 1.20 crore for the construction of the cyclone shelter. The building will be used for schooling purpose generally and function as a shelter during natural calamities.

Patnaik has asked concerned officials to start the construction work at the earliest. The sister duo will lay the foundation stone of the project.

Worth mentioning, the two sisters, who hail from Mahakalpada in Kendrapara district had put their life in danger and managed to drag over 10 passengers to safety after a mechanised boat carrying passengers capsized in the Mahanadi River near Nipania village on January 2, 2019. At least 10 people, including seven children, were killed in the mishap.
