Bhubaneswar: It's often said prevention is better than cure and it seems Odisha Police is now harping on awareness among people to checkmate various cyber criminals who are always on the prowl on social media. Several district units of Odisha Police have now taken to social media to create awareness about online frauds and how to stay protected from falling victims to the traps of cyber criminals.

Many people now prefer to shop a wide range of products from lifestyle to home decor from several online websites. Taking advantage of the new trend, cyber criminals are always on the look out to dupe people.

Mayurbhanj Police had also earlier launched a campaign to create awareness about online shopping and suggested several measures like how a person can protect himself from the cyber criminals.

As per the advisory, one must only shop through established e-retailers with transparent exchange and return policies.

The consumers should always check sellers’ ratings and reviews by other buyers and they should make uninterrupted video recording during delivery and opening of the package.

According to experts, people should not get lured by low prices and they need to avoid payments via bank transfers rather they should opt for cash on delivery (COD). Avoiding making payments on mobile phones if no firewall or anti-virus software are installed should be considered while doing online shopping.

Apart from Mayurbhanj, Ganjam Police is also not far behind in trying to ensure that people are well informed about the frauds and other cyber crimes on social media.

A person also needs to be cautious while sharing personal information on several social networking websites. Similarly, people should avoid friend requests from strangers.
