Bhubaneswar: Odisha capital Bhubaneswar witnessed steepest rise in Covid-19 cases with as many as 248 persons testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.
According to the information shared by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), of the total cases 207 were detected from quarantine centres and 41 local contact cases.
With this, the total tally in COVID19 cases in the smart city now stands at 1,717 including 870 active cases, 834 recoveries and 11 deaths.
Some of the cluster cases reported in the city include 20 cases from Sitapur Basti of Nayapalli linked with earlier positive cases, 27 cases from a private hospital linked with previous positive cases and 45 cases from Mahisikhal Basti of Hari Nagar in BJB Nagar area.
After reporting its first case on March 15, Bhubaneswar was declared Coronavirus free on May 18. However, the total cases in the capital city surged to 320 by June 30. In July, the smart city added 1,397 new cases till date.
BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary while reviewing the coronavirus situation said, "As the number of testing has been increased, more cases are being detected. We have created four more rapid response teams, taking the total number to 14. Now 14 teams will carry out contact tracing. Besides, six more teams are working in the zonal level."
Chaudhary said 46 coronavirus patients who were under home isolation have recovered from the disease. "We are keeping a vigil on them," he added.
On the other hand, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) reported 93 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
Earlier in the day, Odisha recorded its highest single-day increase in COVID19 cases after reporting 1,594 new Coronavirus infections taking the total confirmed cases in the State to 22,693.
Moreover, six persons succumbed to virus in the last 24 hours, taking the COVID-19 death toll in Odisha to 120.
This is the third consecutive day that Odisha reported over 1000 cases. On July 23, the State recorded 1,264 new cases, an increase of 186 cases from the previous day.
