Bhubaneswar: The new wave of Coronavirus pandemic continues to batter Odisha with yet another record surge in positive cases. The State witnessed a massive spike of 4761 Covid cases in a day and also reported 5 more deaths in the last 24 hours.

As per the State I&PR department, this is the highest ever tally of daily Covid-19 infections in Odisha since the outbreak of the pandemic last year. The total number of Covid cases in the State has now climbed up to 377464.

With 1503 recoveries as on April 19, a total of 347637 number of patients have been cleared free from the disease so far which means the active cases now remain at 27821.

Coming to the daily infections, 3 districts in the State have reported more than 500 plus cases of virus infections with Khordha being the worst hit at 820 cases.

Sundargarh is the second in the list with 673 positives and Nuapada reporting 534 cases, both being the districts sharing border with Chhattisgarh. Jharsuguda with 234 cases and Bolangir 322 cases are the other districts accounting for sizeable amount of daily surge in the Covid positive infections today.

As per data available with the government a total of 2785 cases have been reported from quarantine facilities in the last 24 hours  while the remaining 1976 positives are local contacts.

The death toll due to the virus infections meanwhile has risen to 1953. As many as 5 patients have succumbed to the disease in the last one day with Nuapada alone reporting 3 deaths.
