Bhubaneswar: Covid-19 cases continued to multiply in Odisha with yet another record spike on Friday. As many as 718 people were tested positive for Coronavirus infection while four succumbed to the disease while undergoing treatment at different Covid hospitals in the last 24 hours, informed the State I & PR Department.

This is the second-highest Covid case tally in a single day. The total number of cases in the state has now reached 16,110 which includes 5,124 active cases and 10,877 recoveries. On the other hand, Covid death toll surged to 83 today.

Two deceased belonged to Ganjam district, one a 57-year-old male suffering from diabetes while the other was a 60-year-old male suffering from chronic kidney disease.

The third deceased was a 66-year-old male of Angul district who was also suffering from Neuroendocrine Tumor and the fourth patient was a 56-year-old male of Gajapati district suffering from Diabetes and heart ailment.

Out of the fresh cases from 24 districts across Odisha, 479 have been reported from quarantine centres, while a record 239 cases have been detected as local contacts, the health department data said.

Ganjam continued to be the worst-hit district with 231 fresh cases while Khurda reported its highest single-day tally of 150 cases.

Similarly, Malkangiri reported 54 cases, Cuttack (32), Keonjhar (28), Koraput (27), Jharsuguda (24), Mayurbhanj (22) and Gajapati 21 cases.

In contrast to sharp rise in Covid cases during the past week, Sundergarh on Friday reported only 10 cases while Rayagada saw 19 cases, Jagatsinghpur (16), Nayagarh (13), Bhadrak (10), Angul (9), Balasore (9), Puri (9), Kandhamal (7), Sambalpur (7), Dhenkanal (6), Sonepur (5), Kendrapada (4), Bargarh (4) and Nabarangpur reported 1 case.

As per the Health Department data, a record 7818 RT-PCR tests were conducted in the last 24 hours in Odisha taking the cumulative tests to 369738.

Sundergarh district also reported 10 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

As many as 453 COVID-19  patients also recuperated from the disease, taking total  recoveries to 11,330.
