Bargarh: People will miss the much awaited Krishna leela during the Dhanu Yatra in Bargarh which is the largest open air theatre in the world this year. The district administration on Sunday decided not to hold the mega event in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Such decision was announced by Bargarh Collector after a meeting between Dhanu Yatra Committee held today.

Every day thousands of people throng Bargarh to witness the traditional Dhanu Yatra. The Yatra is based on the mythological story of Lord Krishna and his demon uncle King Kansa.

During Dhanu Yatra, King Kansa moves around the city and slaps fine on offenders on the streets which is the centre of attraction during the 11-day festival.

The Kansa Maharaj also enters government offices and pulls up officials for several lapses.
It is pertinent to mention here several important festivals including the Boita Bandana and others were cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic this year.

Similarly, other important festivals including Durga Puja, Kali Puja and Diwali were held in a subdued manner without participation of devotees this year to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As a precautionary measure against COVID-19, the world famous Rath Yatra in Puri was also held without devotees. The gigantic chariots were pulled by servitors and police personnel this year.
