Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sealed Vishal Mega Mart at Unit II market building for violating social distancing and other Covid-19 protocols.

The civic body officials also collected Rs 22,000 fine from others shops in the busy market area in the city for flouting the norms enforced to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

According to sources, the BMC squad conducted the raid in the area to check whether the Covid-19 guidelines are properly followed or not. It found that the norms are blatantly flouted in these shopping malls.

Earlier on March 28, the BMC had sealed Allen Institute after over 20 students tested positive for Covid-19. Similarly, a premier management college in the city was sealed after several students had contracted the virus.

In view of increase in COVID-19 positive cases, the civic body has been taking a series of measures to mitigate the pandemic. On Friday, it issued a notification reducing the number of participants at marriage ceremonies to 100 from existing 200. Besides, it allowed only 50 persons at funeral ceremony.

“For other kinds of social gatherings the host shall have to obtain specific permission from BMC which will be given keeping in view the requirement of the host and prevailing pandemic situation subject to maximum participants ceiling of 100 persons,” the BMC said in its order.
