Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s capital city Bhubaneswar continues to witness a surge in COVID-19 cases with detection of five more positives on Saturday. Moreover, three departments of Utkal University, which is located in the capital city, were sealed today after an employee's contact tested positive for coronavirus.

According to university sources, Philosophy, English and Economics departments have been sealed.

Following the order to seal the departments, all the employees have been barred from coming to office. Moreover, the varsity premises have also been sanitised.

According to Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), five cases were detected in its jurisdiction (till 9 AM on June 6), of which 4 cases were under home quarantine while the fifth one is a local contact case.

Sharing the details of the cases, BMC informed that out of the four home quarantine cases, two from Dumduma and Ghatikia areas have travel history to West Bengal. Another case was reported from Old Town area with travel history to Gujarat. The case that has been traced in Pokhariput area has Delhi travel history in family.

The sole local contact case was reported from Gajapati Nagar area.

So far, a total 86 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been detected in Bhubaneswar of which 51 have recovered. Active cases currently stand at 32 while death toll in the capital city is three.

Odisha today reported its highest single-day rise of 173 cases taking the total tally to 2,781, including 1,167 active cases, 1604 recoveries and eight deaths. The state reported 112 Covid-19 recoveries today.


Ganjam district tops the chart with highest 597 confirmed cases followed by Jajpur with 312 cases.
