Couple killed as wall collapses in heavy rain in Rayagada

Rayagada: A couple died after a wall collapsed on them following incessant rain over the last couple of days at Sulipadar village in Karpa panchayat under Kalyansinghpur block of Rayagada district this morning. However, their eight-year-old son had a narrow escape in the mishap.

According to reports; the deceased identified as Jasamanti Laya and Madhab Laya were brushing their teeth when the wall of their house collapsed killing the duo on the spot.

On being informed, officials of the district administration including the Block Development Officer (BDO), Anup Panda rushed to the spot.

"We rushed to the spot upon getting information. The bereaved family was granted Rs 4,000 under state-sponsored Harishchandra Yojana for performing the last rites of the deceased," informed the BDO.

"After the Revenue Inspector (RI) submits a detailed report on the incident, compensation will be released from the tehsil office," added Panda.
