Dhenkanal: The Inspector In Charge (IIC) of Nihal Prasad Police Station in Dhenkanal was arrested by vigilance sleuths for accepting a bribe of Rs 6000 on Friday.

As per reports, the inspector, Chittaranjan Behera had demanded bribe from one Aintha Sethi whose daughter-in-law had lodged an FIR at the same police station against him, his wife and son, Dipuna Sethi while accusing them of giving her dowry torture.

Following the complaint, the police had charged all the three accused in the Sethi family under Sections 294, 506 and 307.

However, IIC Behera reportedly offered Sethi a clause to remove his and his wife's name by soft pedaling the case to eliminate section-307 from the charge sheet if he pays him a bribe of Rs 6,000.

Sethi managed to arrange the money which he paid to the driver of the IIC, Laxman Sethi, but cleverly he also wrote to the Vigilance SP about the IIC demanding bribe.

"The IIC offered me to remove section-307 and my wife's name from the charge sheet in return of a bribe. I brought the money and deposited it with his driver," said the complainant, Sethi.

Following the complaint, a team of vigilance sleuths from Dhenkanal and Cuttack division raided the spot and recovered the money from Behera's driver Laxman Sethi and took Behera, Laxman and another associate, Prakash Mahali into custody.

Speaking to reporters, Surendranath Rayaguru, DSP, Vigilance of Cuttack division said, "The complainant had written to the Vigilance SP on February 23 about the bribe demanded by the IIC to reduce the sections in the charge sheet. The accused has received the bribe through two other associates of him who have also been arrested along with Behera."
