Cuttack: Three murders in a space of just 24 hours in the Millennium City of Cuttack has not only shocked the entire State but also posed a serious challenge to the Commissionerate Police. However, the city cops are yet to get any breakthrough into these cases.

Sources said though the killer and the motive behind the murders are yet to be ascertained, the three incidents have been suspected to be carried out by a mentally deranged person. This apart, the killer has used the same weapon to murder the three persons, sources added.

“The three murders were carried out in similar manner. We suspect that the killer is targeting homeless and destitute in the city. Adequate number of police personnel have been deployed in Mangalabag and Ranihat areas to provide security to homeless,” said Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty who patrolled the streets of the city along with Cuttack DCP Akhileshvar Singh late last night.

Keeping in view the fact that the three victims were either daily wage labourers or rag pickers, the police teams took many people sleeping on footpaths to the night shelters in the city to ensure homeless, who have been mostly vulnerable, were moved to safer places.

With the help of scientific team, police teams have already collected samples from all the three crime sites.

Yesterday a daily wage labourer was found dead under OMP bridge with injury marks on his neck and head. In another incident, an elderly rag picker was found in critical condition near the Cardiology department of SCB Hospital. The man, however, later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. A few hours before, another youth was found dead with deep injury marks near Taladanda canal on Tuesday night.
