Puri: The process of construction of the wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra will begin today with ‘Ratha Anukula’ in Puri on the occasion of "Akshaya Tritiya".

As per the tradition, the 12-ft sacred logs ‘Dhaura Katha’ will be brought to the ‘Ratha Khala’ near the Jagannath temple.

The process will commence after the axe is touched with the ‘Aagyan Mala’ (garland) followed by special rituals to be conducted by the temple priests.

Due to extensive damage caused to property & infrastructure in Puri post Cyclone Fani, the ceremony will be conducted without much celebrations.

On the other hand, another major event of Lord Jagannath "Chandan Yatra" will also begin on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya today and will continue for 21 days.

As per the age-old tradition, Madanmohan, the representative idols of Lord Jagannath, goddess Laxmi and five Shivalingas, known as Pancha Pandavas, will be taken in a procession from Srimandir in six palanquins along the Badadanda to Narendra Tank.

On the occasion, the two chapas (boats), namely- Nanda and Bhadra at the Narendra Tank have been decorated. After playing ‘Bahara Chapa’ for 21 days at Narendra Tank, the Gods will play ‘Bhitara Chapa’ inside the Srimandir for 21 days.
