Bhubaneswar: Even as Odisha is yet to see the sweeping cold wave conditions till Friday, the big forecast here is wintry chill will soon take the State in its grip. Get ready with your winter wears, as the prediction is Christmas night and morning will be chilly this year.

As per the latest ECMWF forecast, the minimum temperature in the coastal areas of the State will hover between 10 - 12 degree Celsius from December 21. In contrast, the minimum temperature measured today has been hovering between 15 - 19 degree Celsius in the coastal region of the State. IMD data further shows that since December 1, the minimum temperature in coastal areas have not dipped below 15 degree Celsius till date.

A comparative analysis by IMD also shows that the departures of the minimum temperatures this year has been on the positive side, which means the minimum temperatures recorded this year are marginally higher the normal December temperature recorded.

ECMWF Forecast

The ECMWF forecast shows districts like Sundergarh,  Balangir, Sambalpur, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal etc will see their minimum temperatures dropping below 10 deg C. It further predicted that the minimum temperature in the coastal districts like Balasore, Jajpur and Bhadrak will drop below 12 degC. The minimum temperature for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack is predicted to remain at around 12 deg C. ECMWF, however, says, mercury will dip in Odisha from December 21.

IMD Forecast

The country's premiere weather forecasting agency also agrees with ECMWF, but says the chill conditions will set in over Odisha from December 18 (coming Friday). As per the forecast, the minimum temperature in western belt of Odisha starting from Nuapada to Sundergarh will see a significant drop in the mercury.

"The minimum temperature will hover around 10 deg C in the districts along the western border of the State, which means from Nuapada to Sundergarh, whereas the mercury will measure around 10-12 deg C for districts in the central Odisha. In coastal Odisha, the minimum temperature is predicted to remain at around 12-14 deg C," says the winter forecast model of IMD.

How Long Will Chill Conditions Continue

The IMD winter long-range forecast predict the chilly conditions in Odisha to continue till December 31. The cold wave will even be sweeping Odisha on the New Year Day. But the mercury will post very little rise in western belt in the first week of new year (2021). However, the cold weather will continue in the coastal region.
