Child marriage bid foiled in Mayurbhanj; UP youth detained

Mayurbhanj: A bid to marry off a 16-year-old girl at Radho village under Udala police limits in Mayurbhanj district was foiled due to prompt action by police. According to reports, the family members of the minor girl had fixed her marriage with one Pramod Kumar Singh of Uttar Pradesh today.

Sources said the girl was living at her maternal uncle’s house at Radho after the death of her mother couple of years back.

After getting information about the marriage from reliable sources, Udala police conducted raid and stopped the marriage after verifying that the girl was minor.

“The family members of the girl were ignorant that marrying off a girl below the age of 18 years is illegal,” said Sub-Inspector (SI) of Udala police station, Madhusmita Kar adding that the girl’s family members were subsequently convinced to call off the marriage.

Meanwhile, police has detained Singh and further investigation into matter is on.
