Chhatar Yatra: SC Stays Orissa HC’s Ban On Animal Sacrifice

Kalahandi: The Supreme Court on Friday put an interim stay on the Orissa High Court’s order of banning animal sacrifice during the historic annual Chhatar Yatra at Bhawanipatna.

The High Court had imposed a ban on sacrifice of the animals and birds in and around the precincts of Maa Manikeshwari temple during the festival.

Petitioner Bhawani Shankar Nial who had moved the apex court seeking an interim order said, “We are grateful before the apex court for this historical decision. Honourable court has showed utmost respect to the culture of this locality.”

The temple sources informed that the festival will be observed this year in compliance with Covid-19 norms.

Chhatar Jatra is a traditional festival and ritual practice celebrated by the people (especially Khond tribe) of Kalahandi district every year during the Mahastami of Durga puja festival.

People from the neighbouring states like Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh throng the city during the festival, which witnesses a footfall of more than 25 lakh every year.
