Bolangir: It seems repeated awareness to shun caste system stigma has become irrelevant with the social evil still quite prevalent in many interior pockets of Odisha.

In another appalling instance of inhumanity, a man had to carry the corpse of his father on bicycle after fellow villagers did not turn up for the last rites citing the deceased belongs to a lower caste.

The incident has been reported from Lankabehel village under Loisingha block in the district and the deceased has been identified as Akhaya Patra (60).

As per reports, no villagers turned up for his last rites after Patra died yesterday. It is being said that he belonged to a lower caste and he used to eat food from people belonging to different castes.

Finding no other options, the deceased’s son with the help of a relative packed the body inside a sack and carried it on a bicycle for the last rites, sources informed.

“No one helped us for the last rites of my husband as he was a beggar. My son and brother-in-law carried the body on a bicycle and performed the last rites,” said wife of the deceased.

“No one touched my father’s body. Finding no other option, I carried the body on my bicycle and buried it in the river bed,” said son of the deceased.
