Kendrapara: Unidentified miscreants looted gold and silver ornaments from a temple at Sarkar pada village under Jambu Marine police limits in the district late Wednesday night.

According to reports, some miscreants tore open the roof and entered the sanctum sanctorum of Rameshwar temple situated in the area yesterday night. They looted the ornaments stashed inside the temple and also set afire many religious books and other materials.

The matter came to light after the priest of the temple witnessed smoke emitting out of the temple in the wee hours today and informed the locals.

Tension ran high following the incident as locals demanded the police to immediately arrest the accused behind the unsavoury incident. They alleged that a similar burglary was earlier committed in the temple and despite assurances, the police had been unable to nab the culprit.

Forensic teams conducted an initial probe on the spot and police have assured to catch the culprits soon.

Earlier last year, in a series of temple loot incidents, robbers decamped with jewelleries and valuables from a 500-year-old Ramachandi temple in Ramnagar area of the district. An antique idol valued at about Rs one crore and other valuables were also stolen from the Dadhibabanjew temple in Choudkulat village in the district.
