Puri: Continuing its drive against drugs peddling, Police on Sunday seized 273 grams of brown sugar and arrested four persons, including a woman while they were allegedly smuggling the contraband in a car from Bhubaneswar to Puri.

The market value of the seized contraband is estimated to be around Rs 27 lakh, police sources said.

The arrestees have been identified as Prakash Behera (29) of Mangala Sahi in Puri, Seikh Sajan (25) of Sekhbard in Balasore district and Sajan's father Seikh Samatulla (50) and his mother Apsana Bibi (45).

Acting on a tip-off, Sub-Inspector of Chandanpur Police Station, G Pradhan along with other staff of the PS conducted a raid and intercepted the car near Chandanpur. Following a search, police recovered 273 gm of brown sugar from their possession.

Police sources said the accused procured the contraband from Jaleswar in Balasore district. The Chandanpur Police has also seized the car and a mobile phone while all four have been court-forwarded based on a case registered against them under NDPS Act. Further investigation is on.

It may be noted that brown sugar seizures have significantly increased in the district raising concerns for the district administration and the police.

On October 31, five persons including two women were arrested for allegedly smuggling brown sugar in Satyabadi area of Puri district. Police had also recovered 301 grams of brown sugar from their possession.

Prior to that on October 23, around 5.32 gram of brown sugar was seized by the police near at Mashani Chandi Chhak here and four peddlers were arrested. Similarly, Baseli Sahi Police here had seized 273 grams of brown sugar worth over Rs 27 lakh and arrested six persons from Mangalaghat Chhak on October 5.
