Berhampur: In a broad daylight incident, two bike-borne miscreants allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman in Chhatrapur of Ganjam district on Monday.

The incident reportedly occurred near Chhatrapur court station lane when the woman, identified as Asha Devi, was on her way to one of her relatives’ house after visiting Thakurini temple.

Two miscreants intercepted and snatched gold chain from her. The victim has lodged a complaint with Chhatrapur police in connection with the incident.

The police are scanning the CCTV footage installed en route the miscreants escaped and hopeful of nabbing the criminals soon, said sources.

A couple of such chain snatching incidents were also reported in Bhubaneswar last month. On November 11, two-bike borne miscreants reportedly snatched a gold chain from a woman’s neck while she was riding pillion on a bike with her husband in Kharavela Nagar area in Bhubaneswar.

Similarly, two bike-borne men reportedly snatched a gold chain worth Rs 70,000 from wife of a Bhubaneswar-based photojournalist in Laxmisagar area on November 19.

It is alleged that though CCTV cameras have been installed and robust patrolling system is in place by the Commissionerate Police, bike-borne miscreants continue to target women and elderly persons for gold ornaments in broad daylight and manage to escape the net.

On the other hand, the Commissionerate Police arrested two persons on December 7, who had allegedly sold stolen mobile phones of nearly 80 persons. As many as 102 stolen mobile phones were seized from their possession, police had said.

Twin City Police Commissioner, Sudhanshu Sarangi in a tweet had earlier informed that the smartphones were mostly snatched/stolen from various persons in Bhubaneswar. The stolen mobile phones were being taken to Kolkata to be sold in the black market, said Sarangi.
