Berhampur: People residing in the Silk City will no longer face inconvenience due to road dust generated during cleaning activities as the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has introduced night-sweeping of roads.

The night cleaning of stretches has been launched on a pilot basis in BeMC area and Hinjili notified area council (NAC). Instead of daytime, now the sanitation workers engaged by BeMC clean the roads from 9.30 PM to midnight 12 every day.

Sanitation workers have welcomed the move and said it is suitable for them to clean roads during night hours as the movement of people is less during the newly scheduled hours in comparison to daytime.

“Now we work from 9.30 PM to 12 AM. It is easy for us to work during night as the stretches remain mostly empty,” said Mita Nayak, a sanitation worker. Mami Pujari, another sanitation worker, also expressed a similar view.

The residents are also all praises for the initiative and said they are now finding cleaner streets when they wake up in the morning.

“As the roads are cleaned during night, we wake up to clean surrounding in the morning. This is a good initiative. The joggers will not suffer inconvenience as there will be no road dust during morning walks,” said Surya Narayan Patra, a resident of Berhampur.

Speaking about the initiative, District Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange said, “The main objective of the initiative is proper cleaning of stretches and it will ensure that the public do not suffer due to sweeping activities. Initially, we took up the cleaning activities in commercial areas and later it was carried out in residential areas.”
