Berhampur: Barely 24 hours of a shocking incident in which a minor girl was seriously injured after a miscreant threw acid on her body, police today arrested the accused.
The arrested has been identified as Lipun Bisoyee.
According to reports, three miscreants entered the house of the minor girl Mamuni Bisoyee at Gangpur village under Badagada police station limits late on Saturday night while she was sleeping, and threw acid on her body. The miscreants, after the incident, fled the area.
As the girl shouted for help, the family members rushed to her room and immediately admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
Later, acting on the complaint of the family members, Badagada police began investigation and nabbed Lipun.
Narrating the incident, Prakash Swain, uncle of the victim, said the miscreants in the late night entered into the room where my niece Mamuni, her mother, younger sister and grandmother were sleeping. As the room was dark, they put the torchlight on the face of all the members and poured acid on the body of Mamuni and ran away.
Talking to media persons at the MKCG Hospital, Mamuni said she could not recognise the miscreants as they ran away after pouring acid on her body. “There are 2-3 persons involved in this incident. I request the police to arrest them immediately”, she said while sobbing.
Asked about the details, the victim said she was in love with a youth Tofan of her village who was willing to marry her. “But his family members rejected his proposal and got him married to other woman. But his wife, aware of my relationship with Tofan, had engaged Lipun and his associates to eliminate me as she apprehended that he will continue his relationship with me after the marriage”, she added.
Pandav Bisoyee, father of the victim said Tofan had proposed to marry his daughter. “But I told him that the marriage can be possible only if his parents will agree to the proposal”, he added.
As informed by the doctors at the MKCG hospital, the victim has sustained about 50 burn injuries on her body including her face, chest and both the hands.
Additional SP, Ganjam, Gupta Mahakud said preliminary investigation has revealed that the incident is the outcome of a love affair. “As per the statement given by the victim to the police, Lipun and his three associates had threatened the victim earlier. Police has registered a case in this connection. We are on the lookout of the three associates of Lipun. We will arrest them very soon and forward them to the court", he added.
