Kamakhyanagar: Women in a group today took up the cudgels after incessant petitions to the police and district administration demanding closure of a liquor outlet at Kankadahada here in Dhenkanal district fall on deaf ears.

Around 500 women demanding closure of the wine shop in the Gandhi Bazar area of Kankadahada stormed the premises and destroyed the shops.

They had complained to the police and the district administration about the liquor outlet several times but to no avail.

Several goons gather here. Male members of the family have resorted to drinking regularly which has affected our family lives. Many have fallen ill after consuming liquor laced with poisonous chemicals. But, no action has been taken. Police have acted as mute spectators and only patrol areas and go away. This has forced us to take the initiative to shut liquor shop ourselves, a woman said.
