Woman, son die after wall collapses

Bolangir: A woman and her six-year-old son were killed after a wall collapsed on them at Rugudipada Municipality colony in Bolangir district today.

The woman, Jasmit Markami, her son Bitu and six-month-old grandson were sleeping, when a portion of their rented mud house collapsed on them.

Later, locals rescued all three and admitted them to the Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), where doctors declared Bitu brought dead. While the six-month-old baby has sustained minor injuries, critically-injured Jasmit died when undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that a local named Prabha Ray has constructed several mud houses in the colony by encroaching government land and rented them to many poor families. Sources said since the houses are constructed illegally, the district administration has no data regarding them. The administration is yet to comment on the matter.
