Woman sentenced life imprisonment in a murder case

Baripada: A local court today sentenced a 41-year-old woman to life imprisonment after convicting her in a murder committed two years ago.

Mayurbhanj district sessions court judge Pramod Kumar Jena sentenced Astami Mahakud after finding her guilty of the crime.

The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on Astami in default of which she would undergo 6 more months of rigorous imprisonment.

Astami and her husband Ratikant Mahakud of Matihudi village were arrested on the charge of killing Shanti Mahakud of the same village on May 12, 2014 in a dispute over landed property.

Astami had invited Shanti to her house and beat her to death. Police seized the stick used in the killing.

Ratikanta Mahakud was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
