Groom among two killed, bride critical after wedding gift explodes

Patnagarh: In a tragic incident, a wedding gift received by a couple exploded killing the groom and his grandmother while critically injuring the bride in Patnagarh of Bolangir district today.

Earlier in the day, the elderly woman succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Bolangir hospital. Later the groom died on the way to Burla hospital.

“The family had received a parcel bomb in the guise of the gift packet today which exploded while being opened,” said Patnagarh SDPO Sesadeba Bariha.

Dog squad and forensic team of the Bolangir police have reached the spot and started an investigation.

Sources informed that the mishap occurred while opening a gift packet that was received by the couple who got married on February 18.

Initially the injured were rushed to the Patnagarh hospital. As their condition deteriorated, the bride and the grandmother were shifted to the Bolangir hospital where the elderly woman died. The groom however died while being transferred to Burla hospital.
