Brahmapur: In yet another case highlighting the sorry state of health services in rural Odisha, the 108 ambulance failed to arrive in time leading to the death of a woman in labour in Kandhamal district.

The deceased woman was identified as Lata Mahakud from Giridikhola village under Gochhapada police limits in the district.

According to sources, family members of Lata called several times to the 108-ambulance service to take her to hospital after she felt labour pain but in vain.

In sheer desperation, family members then took Lata to the Phulbani hospital in an autorickshaw. But when her health condition deteriorated, doctors at the hospital advised the family members of Lata to shift her to the MKCG Hospital in Bramhapurl. But Lata died after reaching Bramhapur hospital, the sources added.

Following the incident, family members of the deceased filed a complaint against Phulbani SDMO and ADMO at the Phulbani town police station.
