Nabarangpur: In a shocking incident, a woman was held captive by her in-laws, for she failed to give them a child, in Umerkote of Nabarangpur district.

Sources said one Parvati Bhadra of Bakadaveda village had got married eight years ago but she failed to conceive a child. Angry over this, her in-laws and some locals kept her captive in a room.

Being informed, police reached the spot and asked them to release the woman. But the villagers did not pay any heed. Later, Umerkote police station IIC Birendra Kumar Senapati and ASI Sahadeb Chanda with the help of some women cops tried to rescue Parvati.

However, some irked villagers resisted and even attacked the cops, following which three police personnel including the IIC sustained injuries. The angry mob also vandalised the police vehicle.

Strong action would be taken against the attackers, police said.
