Bhubaneswar: Despite the failure of the Commissionerate Police to round up the youths who allegedly misbehaved with a young woman in Nandankanan area on Friday even after 24 hours, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi today said if there were any negligence from the police side in performing their duties, disciplinary action will be taken.

Bhoi added, “If there were any laxity on our part in handling the case, definitely the issue will be addressed.”

Regarding the progress in the case, the Bhubaneswar DCP stated, “We have identified the culprits and one bike used by them has been seized. Apart from this, we are questioning some other people who were present during the incident at the spot.”

Meanwhile, the complainant and her family members alleged the police are taking the matter lightly.

The complainant said, “The distance between the spot and Nandankanan police station is only 15 minutes away by walking and 2-3 minutes in a vehicle. However, the police took 30-40 minutes to reach the spot.”

She stated, “When we asked the police why they reached the spot so late, the answer was the PCR van ran out of petrol,” adding that it seems the cops made her a butt of jokes when she was asking for help in an emergency situation.

Expressing similar views, mother of the complainant said, “In the capital city, women are unsafe as police have failed to provide security to them. Even the response of the PCR van is so callous that I believe cops will reach a spot late even if a young woman is killed.”

She added, “Fortunately the accused were not carrying any sharp weapons. Otherwise, my daughter and her male fried would have suffered something worse. Still the young girl and her friend were beaten up near a roadside shop.”
