Umerkote: At a time when a woman experiences excruciating pain to bring another life to this world and needs medical attention, Kalabati was being carried in a sling with a polythene as rain cover for four kilometres to reach the nearby hospital. However, without even the knowledge of those carrying her, she delivered a baby boy just before her arduous journey ended.

This was yet another instance of ambulance failure owing to bad connectivity in Tohara of Nabarangpur district today.

Kalabati, wife of one Raju Santa of Panhari Kumuda was in labour pain late last night when the family members tried calling 108 ambulance.  Though the ambulance responded, it could not reach the village due to bad roads, half of which were washed away due to heavy rains since past few days. Later she gave birth to the baby boy in the sling itself.

As per Umerkote hospital authorities, Kalabati had already delivered the baby before she arrived in the hospital. Both mother and child are stable, they stated.
