Jeypore: Making mincemeat of the tall claims of government spending crores of rupees to ensure safe motherhood, a woman delivered a baby on the road without any medical assistance at Gujiaguda under Dasmantpur block here in Koraput district as the '102' ambulance failed to reach the patient in time.

The ambulance operating under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) was contacted by the kin of the woman, but it failed to reach the village in time, villagers said.

With no alternative, she decided to walk to the hospital, but suffered from severe labour pain midway.

Later, both the mother and the newborn were taken to the Dasmantapur health centre. The condition of the mother and her baby is stated to be normal.

The incident raised serious questions on the implementation of various Government schemes meant for pregnant women and infants in the tribal dominated district. The incident also reflects the appalling state of affairs of health care in the Maoist-dominated district.
