Malkangiri: The influence of the Maoists is on the wane in the cut-off areas of Malkangiri district has become more evident with the surrender of a wanted cadre before the police today.

Reports said Ram Madkami, a Maoist cadre, arrived at the district headqurters here and surrendered before SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra. He also handed him over a 9 mm pistol and 13 live bullets.

Talking to media persons, the SP said Madkami was working for Malkangiri-Visakhapatnam-Koraput Border Division of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit from 2010 to 2016 and carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

Besides, he was involved in the explosion in Padia block, encounter in Silakota and killing of six persons suspecting them as police informers. Apart from this, several cases are pending against him, the SP added.
He also said the Red Rebels are gradually losing their base in the district as over 500 Maoist sympathisers have surrendered before the district police in the last two weeks.
