Bhubaneswar: Odisha Crime Branch on Monday issued an advisory on Wannacry Ransomeware attack and possible measures that internet users need to follow as a preventive measure.

Special Director General (DG) Police (Crime Branch) B.K. Sharma in a tweet informed about the advisory which has been uploaded on official website of Odisha Police, www.odishapolicecidcb.gov.in.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also issued an advisory asking all banks to put in place a software update at ATMs to prevent their systems from a malware that has attacked payment systems across the world.

As per the guidelines, an internet user needs to keep Anti Ransomeware and Antivirus software up-to-date, keeping real time protection and auto update feature in active mode.

Read the basic tips suggested by the Crime Branch to safeguard against such malware attacks.

The internet users also need to update their operating systems to Windows 10 and others they can click on the link: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms17-010.aspx released by Miscrosoft to update.

The Crime Branch advisory has advised users to ensure that their systems are enabled and configured with firewall to block access to SMB ports.

The users follow the below mentioned steps to disable Server Message Block (SMB).

  1. a) Click the link and download the zip file.

  1. b) Extract the Zip file and run the exe file.
  2. c) After 5 seconds, computer will automatically restart

Computers experts further informed that it is always advisable to keep important files and other data including documents safe by doing routine backups preferably to an external device. The users should not download files in attachments or links without verifying its authenticity.
