New Delhi: Senior BJD leader and Kendrapara MP, Baijayant Panda today urged the Union Textiles ministry to use e-Commerce platforms for promotion of handicrafts.

“Instead of spending time, energy and effort from the government and a large budget, it would be much simpler, cheaper and faster if the Textile ministry can provide facilities to the existing handicrafts workers to simply get listed on the existing e-Commerce platforms,” Panda said during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha.

He said an Odia e-Commerce site www.thumri.com has been promoting handicrafts in Bhubaneswar.

In her reply, Union Textile minister Smriti Irani said these small start-ups in fact have been more productive in their engagement with the weavers because they have gone from one cluster of weavers to another and are individually engaged with them. Similar exercises can be undertaken in the handicrafts sector as well.

“I assure the honourable member of the House that we will explore all possibilities in this regard,” she said.
