Berhampur: An undertrial prisoner (UTP) of Sorada Jail in Ganjam district died at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur on Monday. The UTP, Surjya Gouda was arrested by the police on October 21 on charges of murder.

Later, after the court hearing, he was booked under IPC Section 302 and sent to judicial custody.

However, the day he was lodged in the prison, Gouda fell sick following which he was rushed to the Sorada Hospital at around 3 am and was shifted to MKCG Hospital after his condition deteriorated.

‘’Gouda fell sick and we rushed him to Sorada hospital. The doctors there, after giving him injections, directed to take him to MKCG Hospital in Berhampur. The UTP breathed his last yesterday at 4.35 pm,’’ said Assistant jailor.

Surjya's family members, however, alleged that his health deteriorated in the jail. Demanding an inquiry into the death, they also went on to say that the family was not informed about his deteriorating health condition.

"Surjya's health was fine before he was arrested. If he suffered from illness, the authorities could have informed us. The Jailor came with a letter informing about his death at the hospital. We want to know the actual reason of his death. We demand an investigation and seek justice for my brother," said Surjya's brother.

Meanwhile, police have sent the body for autopsy and began investigation into the incident.
