Cuttack: Heaps of garbage piling on the roads tells the deplorable condition of sanitation in the Millennium City. Stinking smell around the city makes life miserable for denizens as neither drains are being cleaned nor garbage is being lifted.

It seems the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has become mute spectator to the poor sanitation condition.

After OTV telecast on the problem a year ago, authorities of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) hastily erected barricades near Khannagar Press Chhak. However, the CMC has turned blind eye to litter scattered all around.

"The Cuttack Mayor never thought how beautification can be done in the city. If someone enters the city, the person will first encounter heaps of garbage," said Pradeep Behera, former Corporator.

Expressing similar views, environmentalist Asutosh Behera said, "Awareness on sanitation should be created among public. Besides, the CMC officials should pay attention to beautification of the city."

When Cuttack Mayor Meenakshi Behera was contacted, she said the issue will be discussed during the ensuing traffic management committee meeting and steps will be taken thereafter.

"I will direct the CMC Commissioner to undertake spot assessment and take steps to ensure beautification of the city," Behera added.
