UGC revamps model syllabi for Psychology

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has changed the syllabus for Psychology subject as it believes that the old syllabi have failed to fulfil societal needs.

“Psychology, as taught in institutions of higher learning was neither keeping pace with the recent developments in the discipline nor fulfilling the societal needs. The present course contents commonly taught in the classroom were not rooted in the ‘national ethos,’” UGC said in a release.

In view of this, UGC had earlier constituted a committee of experts to look into the different aspects of teaching and research in Psychology, besides drawing upon considerable work to develop vibrant model syllabi for different levels.

Meanwhile, the model syllabi for Psychology to be taught at B.A/B.Sc, M.A/M.Sc and Ph.D. has been prepared by the expert committee taking into consideration the developments in the field of Psychology, with special relevance to the Indian context.

However, the new syllabus has met some criticisms from academics, accusing the UGC of overreaching though every university has its own board of studies, executive and academic council to decide matters related to academics. And so, the commission should not encroach on that sphere, they felt.
