UGC conducts on the spot inspection of 159 private universities

Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Taking cognizance of the degrading level of education in India, (University Grant Commission) UGC has conducted on the spot inspection of 159 out of 278 private universities to check whether they are following the prescribed guidelines to impart higher education or not.

In his written reply to a Rajya Sabha question on Thursday, Minister of State for Human Resource Ministry, Mahendra Nath Pandey said not even a single Indian educational institution is in the top 20 world class institution. However, UGC is taking necessary steps and requisite measures to ensure quality of education in Universities.

“In consonance with the provision of the UGC (Establishment of and Maintenance of Standards in Private Universities) Regulations, 2003, the UGC has already conducted on the spot inspection of 159 out of 278 private universities to assess whether these are fulfilling the minimum criteria in terms of programmes, faculty, infrastructural facilities, financial viability, etc, as laid down from time to time by the UGC and other concerned statutory bodies or councils, the HRD (MoS) reply reads.

The minister also said that the government has set up Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) with an initial capital base of Rs 300 crore to escalate investments in the higher educational institutions towards infrastructure and other purposes.
