Rayagada: Seven tourists were allegedly assaulted by a group of cattle traffickers near Patupadar in Rayagada on Friday night. The tourists have lodged a complaint with Chandili police station.

Nearly 20 to 30 persons brutally attacked the group of tourists including three women, who had come from Andhra Pradesh. The condition of one tourist, who has sustained head injury, is stated to be critical, according to sources.

The tourists were roughed up only because they opposed and raised voice against beating and torture of the animals by the traffickers.

The ordeal of the tourists did not end here as despite frantic calls to 100, no police official responded for immediate assistance. The attackers later misbehaved and also snatched the mobile phones of the tourists.

The tourists finally lodged an FIR at Chandili police station in the district.

Talking to media persons, Rayagada SDPO Y.Jagannatha Rao said, "They had filed a report at Chandili police station. During spot visit after the case registration it was found the incident occurred near Putupadar village under jurisdiction of Bissamcuttack police station, so it was transferred to Bissamcuttack. A case has been registered and investigation is on."

Rayagada Collector Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar took immediate action on the issue after the news spread on mass media.

She said, "The Additional SP had been called immediately and he directed the police force to take immediate measures in accordance with law to help out the victims and also to trace the culprits as far as possible."
