Bhawanipatna: The body of the minor girl, who succumbed to her burn injuries at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela yesterday, was cremated at her native village Madhupur under Lanjigarh block in Kalahandi district this morning.

A pall of gloom descended the village after the body of the minor girl arrived at the village in the night in an ambulance van from IGH. The body was later consigned to flames this morning.

The victim was a Class X student of TRW School at Madhupur under Lanjigarh block.

The incident took place on January 10 when she had gone to a nearby stream to attend nature’s call on Wednesday afternoon. Two youths, identified as Bulu Das and Shyama Sahoo of the same village, had passed lewd comments at her.

The girl had protested and informed the matter to her parents. Her mother then had cautioned the youths for the act.

Enraged by her mother’s warning, the two youths had abused the girl’s father in presence of others. Later in the evening when the girl was alone in her house, they trespassed and allegedly set her on fire after dousing her with kerosene oil, police sources said.

Hearing the girl’s screams, local people rescued her and rushed her to a nearby hospital from where she was shifted to VIMSAR at Burla as her condition deteriorated. However, the doctors referred her to IGH.

Following the incident, Narla police arrested six accused—Shyama Sahu, Bulu Das, Parameswar Sahu, Gitanjali Sahu, Madhav Das, Kanti Das.

While Shyama Sahu was sent to juvenile jail, the five other accused were sent to the district jail.

Meanwhile, the Crime Branch police today took Bulu and Shyama on a five-day remand for interrogation after getting permission from the court of Additional District Judge (ADJ).
