Nimapara: Tension near the Chari Chhak of Nimapara eased today and a road blockade staged by irate locals at the Chari Chhak was lifted following a discussion between the Puri district administration and the villagers.

The talks were held in presence of the Puri SP and Additional Collector to find a solution to the issue and pacify the tension emerged after social worker Santosh Pradhan, who was on a hunger strike since November 18 over disrupting health services in the area, was forcefully taken on Friday by the police to an unknown place.

Earlier in the day, the locals torched a police van after a pitched battle with police personnel at the Chari Chhak bazaar prompting the district administration to clamp prohibitory order under section 144 of Cr PC.

Krushna Rout, a local, said, “The police first lathicharged locals staging a road blockade. In their reaction, the local youths might have done something. By the time we reached the spot everything was over.”

Commenting on the issue, Sarthak Sarangi, Puri SP, said “Some locals have violated the law and torched the police vehicle which are not acceptable in any condition.”

Meanwhile, Opposition Congress alleged the whole issue happened because of the local MLA from the ruling party.

Biswa Ranjan Mohanty, Congress leader, said, “If we talk about the unavailability of doctors at the Chari Chhak hospital, can it be called politicisation? At last the locals hit the road to fulfil their demands.”

Refuting the charges, Samir Das, BJD MLA from Nimapara, stated, “Allegations are made only as part of a political game plan. As the panchayat polls are in near future, they are provoking some anti-social youths to create disturbance and attack police.”
