Bhubaneswar: Even as most parts of interior Odisha reeled under an intense heat wave, the Met office has predicted a rise in temperature in the coastal belts in the next 24 hours.
Talking to OTV, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said a trough line, stretching from Bihar up to north-west Bay of Bengal and passing through Jharkhand and West Bengal, has formed this morning.
“While the wind flow from the rear side of the trough line is from the west and north-west direction, the wind flow from the eastern side of the trough line is from south and south-west direction. Under its influence, there is little possibility of rainfall in the neighbouring areas of Jharkhand and West Bengal as there is less flow of moisture in the air. On the other hand, the wind flow towards coastal Odisha is mostly from the south direction from Andhra Pradesh though the wind direction varies at times from south-south-west or south-south-east direction. As the wind speed remains relatively high at 30-35 kmph, there is less possibility of a rise in temperature in coastal Odisha,” Sahu said.
But he said as the wind speed gradually weakens while moving north, the temperature in Chandbali and Balasore went up to 40 degree Celsius and above today.
He also said the temperature in coastal Odisha will rise in the next 24 hours.
“As per the model indicator, the wind flow towards coastal Odisha will be either from the west or north-west direction tomorrow, which will obstruct the sea breeze. This will result in a marginal rise in temperature by 1-2 degrees in most parts of coastal Odisha. But the temperature will go up further in next 48 hours from April 22 onwards though there is possibility of a marginal fall in temperature in most parts of the state from April 24. But there will be no significant change in the weather condition till April 27,” Sahu said.
Meanwhile, Titlagarh emerged as the hottest place in the state today with 46.5 degree Celsius.
As per a Met release here this evening, apart from Titlagarh, temperature soared to 40 degrees and above in 16 places. They were: Balasore (40), Chandbali (41.2), Cuttack (38), Bhubaneswar (38.9), Angul (44.7), Baripada (42.2), Jharsuguda (45.3), Keonjhar (43.6), Sambalpur (44.6), Hirakud (44.5), Talcher (44.8), Bhawanipatna (45), Balangir (45.5), Phulbani (42.2), Malkangiri (43), Sonepur (46.2) and Dhenkanal (41.7).
