Sukinda: Sukinda Chromite Mine of Tata Steel in Jajpur district of Odisha has bagged Bala Gulshan Tandon Excellence Award for overall performance for the year 2015-16 given by Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI), the premier mining body of the country.

D.B Sundara Ramam, Executive-In-Charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD),Tata Steel and Rajesh Patel, Chief, Mining, Sukinda Chromite Mine of Tata Steel received the award from Piyush Goyal, Minister for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines, Government of India on October 3, 2016 at the 50th Annual General Meeting of FIMI in New Delhi.

The award was given after analysis of the performance of the mine followed by site-assessment by experts on aspects of operational excellence like environmental best practices, corporate social responsibility, finance and human resource management, scientific mining and biodiversity conservation . On the basis of it the Jury Committee for FIMI Awards 2015-16 has selected the winners. FIMI gives nine such awards annually in four categories i.e. Overall Excellence, Environment, Health and Safety and Social Awareness.

Expressing happiness on SCM being conferred with the honour, Ramama said, "As a responsible corporate we will continue to pursue excellence while mining responsibly, adopt the best practices of the industry and promote inclusive growth around our operations."

Being the first mine in the country to roll out Sustainable Development Framework in January 2016, a concept proposed and promoted by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, for the development of culture of sustainable mining in the country, SCM had set the standards for best practices. It was also honoured with CII ITC Sustainability Award 2015 for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility.
