Bhubaneswar/ Burla: Taking strong note of the botched blood transfusion in Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla, the Health and Family welfare department has suspended blood bank official Rajendra Patnaik.

According to sources, the laboratory technician and the data entry operator have also been dismissed from service for the 'administrative lapses.'

Meanwhile, suspense over the botched blood transfusion at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla continues with hospital authorities administering HIV treatment to the patient without waiting for the ELISA report of the transfused blood.

The hospital authorities' decision not to make the ELISA report public has strengthened the suspicion that all is not well in the case.

The HIV treatment of the patient who got a blood transfusion done at the hospital a few days back without waiting for the ELISA report has added more substance to the allegation that the patient was transfused with HIV-infected blood. Meanwhile, the patient’s relatives have said that if the allegations of HIV positive blood being transfused are proved true in the ELISA report, they will take legal action.

“The hospital staff called me and said that something has gone wrong with the blood transfusion and gave me HIV medicines. Then they took the signature of the patient and me and then I got the tablets. They have thrown the patient into the clutches of death,” said the relative of the patient.

Meanwhile, hospital staff and VIMSAR authorities are tight-lipped about the whole incident. Whatever report comes will be given to the government, said Blood Bank officials.

“Whether the test results are negative or positive, no one will be given any information and the report will be sent to the concerned authorities,” said Burla blood bank official Chittaranjan Prasad.
