Suar Mahasuar Nijog demands probe into use of adulterated ghee in Puri temple

Puri: Days after Sri Jagannath Temple Adminstration (SJTA) imposed restrictions on the sale and use of adulterated ghee in the Puri temple, the Suar Mahasuara Nijog today raised questions on its implementation alleging rampant use of adulterated ghee for Kotha Bhoga and lighting earthen lamps here on Saturday.

Blaming the district administration and SJTA behind all such irregularities, the members of the Nijog have urged for a CBI probe into the use of adulterated Omfed ghee, which is being used at present.

"I urge the state government to conduct a CBI probe into the matter. This ghee should be examined in the laboratory. I can challenge that the Omfed ghee is adulterated. Few days back, the SJTA had imposed restrictions on the use of adulterated ghee. But I don’t see any change in the functioning,” a member of the Nijog said.

Asked about the frequent change in rules imposed by the SJTA, he said, "The SJTA has powers to change every rule as and when they want. I have also heard that Rs 500 will be charged per person for temple darshan. So anything is possible."

The growing irregularities in the temple have raised concerns of the Sevayats and temple staff. Earlier on September 4, sacks of rice meant for cooking ‘Prasad’ were found to be worm-infested upon inspection by the OTV team. Surprisingly, the packets had FSSAI logo but the rice inside was found to be of substandard quality with worms swarming all over.
