Bhubaneswar: Authorities of 10 colleges including the BJB Autonomous College today cancelled the ensuing students’ union elections due to violence.
Tension ran high in BJB Autonomous College in the capital city here this evening after the teachers’ council decided to cancel the election. Protesting the decision, irate students staged road blockade in front of the college on Bhubaneswar-Puri road by burning tyres. Police foiled the suicide attempt by a student.
Sensing trouble, the college authorities declared sine die and asked the boarders to vacate the hostels immediately. With the request of the authorities, the Khurda district administration took charge of the college premises to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, two platoons of armed police force have been deployed in around the campus to ward off any untoward incident.
Notably, tension prevailed in the college campus this morning after some anti-social hurled country bomb at the Science Block. The students had earlier urged the authorities to take necessary steps to ban the entry of non-students into the college campus.
Apart from BJB College, the election was cancelled in nine colleges. They are, Ekamra College, Bhubaneswar, Basic Science College, Bhubaneswar, City Women’s College, Bhubaneswar, Simulia College, Balasore, Nimapara College, Nimapara, Govt Autonomous College, Angul, Sadhu Goudeswar College, Jajpur, Upendranath College, Soro and Gopalpur College, Soro.
On the other hand, authorities of Capital Law College in Bhubaneswar, who had earlier declared sine die in the college due to pre-poll violence, today decided to conduct elections. The authorities, in a notification, lifted sine die and declared that the election would be held as per the schedule.
However, hectic campaign is underway in Utkal University and Rama Devi Women’s University in the capital city where the aspiring candidates are trying their best to win the election.
“We want the election should be held in a peaceful manner and the students be given the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights”, said Mahesh, an aspiring student of Utkal University.
Chinmayee, a candidate of Rama Devi Women’s University said she is feels really excited with the support of the students. “I hope that the nomination would pass off peacefully tomorrow and let the excitement and enthusiasm prevails among the students”, she added.
