Baripada: School students being employed in sundry works by school teachers has become a trend of sorts in the State with one more case of a teacher asking girl students of her school to work in fields coming to fore. Three girls of class six Gulugulia Primary school in Thakurmunda were allegedly made to work in the paddy fields of a teacher in Taneipala village of Keonjhar district on November 20.

The incident has triggered tension among the locals of Thakurmunda area here in the district on Saturday.

According to sources, the teacher identified as Sangita Munda, language teacher of the school, allegedly made the three girls work in her paddy fields on three days for a paltry sum of Rs 100 each.

Later, after getting to know that the parents of the students were searching for them, she reportedly rushed back to the school.

After the parents informed the matter to the school committee, the incident triggered tension among the locals of the area. However, the locals were pacified after former MLA and Cluster Resource Coordinators (CRC) reached the spot and held discussions with them.

Meanwhile, Block Education Officer, Chintamani Mahanta has assured to look into the matter.

“The incident violates the Child Labour Act. If found guilty stringent action will be taken against the accused teacher,” he added.
