Puri: Police on Friday claimed to have busted a major prostitution racket in Puri that mostly engages girls from other parts of the country including West Bengal.

Two persons including a hotel manager have been arrested while two girls were rescued by police during a raid on a guest house at Puri market.

Addressing a press conference, Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi informed that girls engaged in the prostitution racket in other parts of the State usually give their contact numbers to hotel managers and waiters in Puri.

After getting calls from them, the girls then used to arrive in Puri and return back in trains to their respective destinations.

“We have been getting complaints regarding a prostitution racket and acting on a tip off, a raid was conducted and two persons including the guest house manager and a customer have been arrested. We are interrogating the girls who hail from Dhenkanal and West Bengal,” said Sarangi.

Sarangi further informed that soon a special drive will be launched to put a check on prostitution in Puri. However, as lakhs of tourists throng the city on religious trips, raids are usually conducted after getting concrete information and intelligence inputs.

“We urge public to report whenever they suspect illicit flesh trade in hotels and other guest houses and their names and other credentials will be kept secret,” Sarangi added.
