Berhampur: A senior citizen pilgrim died after he fell sick during the travel to South India under Government's pilgrimage scheme Baristha Nagarika Tirtha Yatra Yojana.

The deceased identified as Bhagaban Maharana of Balajipentha in Berhampur fell sick suddenly due to asthma during his trip to Tirupati. He was also administered required treatment during the journey.

However, he fell ill again in the train and was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after arrival. He died while undergoing treatment.

His family has sought financial assistance from government. "We requested the government to provide some financial assistance. We are under severe distress. He had gone on a pilgrimage under the government scheme", son of the deceased said.

Ganjam Collector Prem Chandra Chaudhary said that required treatment was provided on the way. But, unfortunately he died after arriving in the city,  he added.

Earlier, a bus carrying the pilgrims met with an accident in Vellore leaving around 30 injured.
